Combined Resistance to Multiple Antibiotics: A Growing Problem in the EU

On the occasion of the 10th European Antibiotic Awareness Day, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has released its latest EU-wide data on antibiotic resistance, along with guidance on the prevention and control of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).

The 2016 data show a continued increase in combined resistance to multiple antibiotic groups for Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter species. This trend is particularly concerning, as infections caused by these multidrug-resistant bacteria leave patients with very limited treatment options.
